Last Wednesday’s opening was faced with miserable weather, yet I was grateful to meet new and old people, some as far away as Yorktown! Also a wonderful surprise to see my old friends from ODU/FASA!
And then a Valentines lunch with my better half at Gaston’s. Which got me thinking, I should look to paint some more food subjects. Yes?
Saturday, I went to see the NOICE - Norfolk Orginal Indie Comic Expo. It was great to see old friends from my Apple days as well as Norfolk Drawing Group peeps. There were lots of great artists and cool merch, but alas, my cash flow was limited. I did score a Bride of Frankenstein poster from Greg Steele and some more posters for my classroom. My friend Lee Troxell, (pictured below) has a great comic he is putting out called, “Jack Squat”. If you loved the 80’s era action and adventure, this comic is for you! Other comic vendors had wonderful mini comics, posters, skateboard art and even pop-out books that you assemble yourself. Todd was giving cartoon drawings for a buck, so I couldn’t resist, plus, he’s an awfully nice human being! I am looking forward to going to next years expo in 2026. Who knows? Maybe I’ll have a booth for my comic lab experiments.
Here’s a new painting from a color study demo that I did for my students. This was a fun painting to show them how to break down a painting from simple shapes and work up from there (top). It was started initially upside down until I got to a place where I felt it was ready to dive into the details, (bottom).
Here’s a flash back painting I did from the Coastal VA Plein Air. It was a great scene that deserves a larger treatment.
Until next time!
